Our elected representatives in Washington, D.C. have failed us. They are unable or unwilling to acknowledge that a sizable majority of Americans want to get us out of Iraq as soon as possible. The Republican members of Congress continue to argue in favor of the "surge" strategy of the Bush administration. Many of their Democratic counterparts across the aisle who sent the Supplemental Authorization bill to President Bush (which included benchmarks and timetables for withdrawal) are now saying that they have "made their point" and will now vote to continue funding of the war without any preconditions.
We propose a "general strike" on Saturday, June 2, 2007 to indicate to our elected representatives that America opposes this war, desires that our troops be brought home as quickly as possible, and does not support any further funding of this war. A "general strike" means that we will not work on that day, and we will not shop on that day. We will not go to the movies that day, or to sporting events. We will not spend any money at all. We will vote against the Iraq war with our wallets and our labor. The potential impact of a widely supported general strike cannot be overstated. It will be a clear demonstration that the American people are no longer willing to wait patiently while Congress dithers and negotiates about "nonbinding goals" and other illusory language which will do nothing to hasten our exit from this war. If enough people join this one-day general strike, our voices will be heard, loud and clear, in Washington. If necessary to drive the point home with our elected representatives, the general strike can be repeated -- the next time on a weekday.
We can send a message to Congress and the President that, as a nation, we will not tolerate this ill-conceived, counterproductive, and poorly executed war any longer. Our troops need to come home now. We have played Washington's "wait and give it another 6 months" game long enough. If you support this citizen initiative, please participate in the general strike, and please e-mail this message to five other people. Thank you.
